How would you rate Tax Act?

Each year with this business you never know how much you will be charged. On top of changing their prices every year, they charge you 5 different (5!) times to completely file your taxes. Once you file your taxes, tax act will set you in with a price and then bill you. From there if you want to print tour taxes they will charge you again and bill you (once each time for your federal and for your state) and then if you want to pay online you will also be charged a convenience fee (again separately for your federal and state). Once you pay to file you're pretty much forced to pay for all the subsequent features because you don't want to lose the money you already spent for them to file and are forced to pay for everything else. Predatory billing style in my opinion.
They aren't transparent about what you will need to file your taxes electronically and if you don't have all of that information like the amount of last year's AGI or PIN numbers or all sorts of other things then you spend the money and you really can't use the service... Also, they make it sound like they're recommended or approved by the IRS but they're not. If you go to the IRS website they have all sorts of free ways to file your taxes electronically and I used one and instead of getting $833 back as in what Tax Act was claiming they could get me, I got back $1,700! Don't use them! Go to the IRS website and use their free options.

We've used TaxAct for several years. This year, we owed over 7K on our Federal taxes and opted to pay by credit card, all of which is handled by the TaxAct site when you file your return. We completed the filing and the payment. When we printed our return and forms, they said we had submitted our payment. Nothing ever showed up on the credit card; it was never charged. Now the TaxAct site says we 'elected to pay at a later date.' This is absolutely NOT true. We will now have to pay a PENALTY because of this screwup, and TaxAct refuses to take any responsibility. And it is almost impossible to contact them to speak with a representative to try to fix the problem. In short, AVOID TAXACT!
I have used TaxAct for 6 years to file our S-Corp returns, and the occasional extension. To go through all the prompts takes time, but in the end, everything was perfect and filed immediately. My son used TurboTax Deluxe for a multiple state tax return, and only one state filed. He just heard from NY and they want him to pay $4K for 2016 (5 years later!)- and 1/2 of that amount is penalties and interest. Now, I know he should have checked to be sure everything went through and the payment actually was taken from his bank account in 2017 when he filed - However . . . I will say that TaxAct has never gotten it wrong for us.
I have used a CPA and TurboTax in the past, but stupidly tried TaxAct for what I thought would be an easy return.
The software is poor, instructions poor and phone support awful.
I paid the $244.75 for this awful product.
Today I paid a CPA $375 to file amended returns to correct their mistake.
They take responsibility and the refunds are nonexistent.
Considering filing suit in small claims.
2020 they changed their software to the not so good. Couldn't e-file my taxes had to mail them in and was told all I had to do is mail in the attachment that was required. I was giving the run around for 3 hours and charged for other services that wasted that departments time and mine then had to be transferred back to taxact customer service to be told I don't know what to do,,, (wow)... I've been doing taxes with taxact from 2015 and was told for not being satisfied that they would refund $80, but that didn't happen. They did tell me that they had trouble placing the refund and I may have to call back. Called back talked to a rude person named Chris and then he hung up on me and was not given a chance to do the survey at the end of call! Go figure I guess Chris didn't what me to do the survey. I guess I'll wait for his manager to call me?
In last February 7, in TaxAct home page the TaxAct Premire marked as $34.95. I started with TaxAct on line on the same day Feb 7,2021, and I printed TaxAct screen which shown the price $34.95. After start my 2020 tax return with TaxAct I verified the price it was $34.95. But Later when I tried to file the return the TaxAct charged me $64.95. I called support I was told the price was changed. This is not acceptable behavior. TaxAct using lower price got customer started using the TaxAct prepare the Tax return. When customer ready to file the tax return the customer was forced to pay high price in my case I was forced to pay twice the original price.
Night of the deadline trying to help my father file his taxes and apparently the site is too busy to even get on. So I call customer support and am told the volume is too high and hung up on. Kind of weird to have a site built for one purpose, yet it cannot even do that one task.
I had been using TaxAct for more than 6 years. I always have had good experiences until this year. I had 2 problems, neither has been resolved. The first is more of an IRS issue where I had to file an amended return and the IRS has yet to even acknowledge it so what they think I owe is very different than what I really owe. However, TaxAct's "expert" Audit Protection Service didn't even understand the IRS rules around one of the line items (I actually educated them on the topic by pointing them to an IRS publication!). They (or I should say, we) crafted a letter to the IRS for follow-up; I'm not sure when it will be acknowledged. The second is a true bait-n-switch on their Refer-A-Friend program. The terms that are currently stated on their website are very clear: "A 'new' TaxAct customer refers to anyone who did not file with TaxAct in the previous tax year." With that being said, the PREVIOUS year refers to 2019. I referred my son this year to file his 2020 taxes; he did file with TaxAct in 2018 and previous years but filed them himself in 2019. After following up with TaxAct since they never sent the referral bonus, I received an email from Amanda in their Support Department and I quote, "Unfortunately the referral reward was declined as it was determined the referred friend has already been a TaxAct customer in 2018, 2017 and prior years. The purpose of the Refer-A-Friend program is to recruit new customers who have never heard of TaxAct or who have never used our services, that includes last year, but not limited to the year prior. I will put in a request to review the language used on our help pages to indicate a more accurate description of eligibility for the new customers recruited with the Refer-A-Friend program." Regardless of what they think is the Refer-A-Friend "purpose", the terms that are CURRENTLY stated on their website are very clear and should be honored. Amanda chose not to honor them and ignored further follow-up attempts; classic bait-switch. I am definitely done with TaxAct.

TaxAct is very confusing now and will only offer help if you pay more money. They have gone downhill fast. I am going with H&R Block from now on.
I have used taxact for several years and it was good for the most part I did taxes for myself and my family using tax act and this year with the stimulus and the rebate recovery because of something in their system that wasn't checked on their end of the software it wasn't allowing my stimulus amounts to be calculated so with that being said I had to file to amended returns and now possibly wait up to 32 weeks to get that I had called them a couple times and the third time finally someone walked through the process she had to put me on hold to ask questions to somebody and then finally when I was doing it at the end after she marks some box on their end the right information came up and it calculated it and I had to mail in my minute return so I'm very upset that now I'm going to have to wait almost a year 32 weeks to get my stimulus because of something on their end. I sent them an email requesting someone to call me and no one has called me.
They will switch the price at the very end after you have spent hours inputting info. They will steal your money and authorize payment for additional services you did not agree to once they have your credit card or account info. Avoid this site - please do not let them steal from you, too! There are way too many legitimate, ethical competitors out there.
Each year when I efile with TaxAct I print a copy of my taxes for the record. This year their Efiling to the Oregon Department did not show my W2 income, did not show the taxes contributed by my employer. I was shocked! I talked to three agents, none could explain what happened and NONE COULD HELP ME they just hang-up. Fortunately I had my printed copies so I filed them. Go to hell TaxAct!
